February Book Giveaway

I think I’ll start doing a book giveaway every month, at least until I run out of books to give away. Starting with this book.

Beverly Cleary was a favorite author of mine growing up. Throughout the years, my Dad read pretty much all of the Ramona Quimby books to me. Cleary is one of those rare authors that truly understands how children think. But it wasn’t until I was older that I realized she wrote some young adult (YA) as well.

I don’t know about you, but YA is very hit-or-miss with me. The universal appeal of YA is that while our teenage years are certainly not the best years of our lives, they’re certainly the most vivid. So diving back into that world can be a fun diversion. But all my life I’ve had a lot of trouble finding YA books I could actually relate to, or that even remotely resembled my own teenage experience.

Then, recently, I read this annoying article in which the author confidently writes, “sex, drinking and drugs are part of a teenager’s reality. This isn’t me suggesting every teenager has sex, or drinks, or does drugs — only that it’s there. It exists for them. And some adults may bluster — ‘Bluh, bleh, muh, not my teenager!’ — to which I say, even Amish teenagers deal with this. The Amish. The Amish. So, I’m always dubious of any young adult book that doesn’t at least address one of these three in some way.”

When I read this I rolled my eyes so hard that they were sore for days. If this is what people think the reality of every teenager is, it’s no wonder I could never find YA I could actually relate to.

Anyway. All that to say, I tend to collect YA that addresses what I see as the actual universal feelings of young people. Like when you like a guy more than they like you, or when you’re angry at your mom but can’t fully pinpoint where your feelings stem from, or when things matter enormously but you can’t explain why, or when you like the idea of a guy more than the actual guy, or when you start to discover how big and interesting the world really is.

This compilation by Beverly Cleary addresses all those feelings, and more. It is such a fun read. I recently found a second copy, and decided to give it away to one of my readers.

The compilation includes three books:

Jean and Johnny

Fifteen

The Luckiest Girl

If you’re interested in some fun happy reading, comment below or on Facebook saying you’d like to be entered. You can also mention what your favorite books were as a teenager, if you wish. If you share this post on Facebook or Twitter I’ll give you an extra entry. Just mention in your comment that you shared it.

That’s all for now. Happy Reading!

I have never read Beverly Cleary and just recently someone mentioned to me that every child/young adult should read her. So I would like to win these books! My teen years are quite a long time ago, however I do remember reading “Never Miss a Sunset” by Jeanette Gildge many times.

  10. I must be a child at heart because if a book is written well, even children’s books, of which I read many, I never out grow it. Unless I read it 67 times and then I just need a fresh one 😉. I suppose I would be considered grown up tho…and so growing up….
L.M. Montgomery… James Harriot… Among many others. ☝I think I’ll go dig out James Harriot again, it’s been awhile.

  16. Yay, I love Beverly Cleary! One of my favorite books as a teen was “Enemy Brothers”. It’s a WWII fictional story that instead of being dark and scary is heartwarming and sweet, even though it has its tense moments certainly. The writing is very well done, in my opinion.

  19. These would be great books for my girls as they get older. Currently they are 4. But my older boy has been enjoying the Ramona books for a couple years already. Classics! I didn’t realize she wrote for an older audience.

  20. Pick me!! Beverly Butler’s “Light a Single Candle” reminds me a bit of the book you’re offering to give away. Also some of her other books. I read L.M. Montgomery too, but connected more with Emily than with Anne. I also liked going to my grandma’s house and borrowing “old” books, like Francena Arnold and Harold Bell Wright.

Les Mis, George Macdonald’s fairy tales, LM Montgomery, and Dorothy Sayers detective stories. I had an unfortunate lapse of reading in my late teens, but the earlier part was filled with fantasy and a search for the best and rarest fairy tales. This collection sounds delightful.

I also enjoyed Lee Roddy’s books and Peggy Jo hmmm there was also that Northwood series. Best Friend series by Hilda Stahl. Elizabeth Gail by Hilda Stahl. I think you know my favorite author as a teen/preteen. The Joy Spartan books were hilarious to me as a young girl. When I read them recently I found them only slightly amusing.

  26. I debated commenting for several days, because I don’t want to be one of those commenters that just comments on giveaways, but in the end, the love of books won out.

I feel like I didn’t discover a lot of YA books until I was out of my teens (I never read L.M. Montgomery until I was in my twenties!) But now I’m discovering them and they fast are becoming some of my favorites. Right now I’m slowly working my way through some of Redwall series by by Brian Jacques. The Mouse Guard comic book series is also interesting for a change in pace.

I cannot remember a time when I didn’t rush to the shelf where Beverly Cleary’s books were when we went to the library. Now I can’t find ANY of her books that I haven’t read and re-read quite a few times. My favorite YA books by her were The Luckiest Girl, and Fifteen. Ya’ll should read them. I really recommend them.
