Birthday Giveaway

Edit: This giveaway is now closed. I will announce the winner tomorrow morning!

Today I turned 25 years old. I knew I would be working all day, so I decided to celebrate by hosting my first ever blog giveaway.

Welcome!

I tried especially hard to craft a package that would be interesting to everyone who reads my blog, whether they are young or old, male or female.

Birthday

(I put the items on my head in a sad attempt to make the picture less boring.)

If you win the giveaway, you will receive…

1. A signed copy of my book, “Emily.”

2. A green pottery mug so that you can sip tasty beverages while reading good books.

3. The book “Paris Underground” by Etta Shiber.

…never heard of it? Neither had I, until I randomly pulled it off of our bookshelf and started reading it. I was immediately FASCINATED.

Basically, it is a true story about two middle-aged ladies who smuggled British soldiers out of Paris during WWII. It is equal parts funny and frightening and historical and enlightening.

Turns out it came into our household from Ben’s girlfriend Amanda, who gave it to Ben for Christmas. So far me, my mom, and my 98-year-old grandfather have all read it. None of us could put it down.

That’s why I bought a second copy for a blog giveaway. I figured it was a book that everyone would like.

4. Bonus gift! I’ll write you a short story in which you will be a primary character.

To enter the giveaway, please leave a comment on this blog post stating a random fact about yourself. If you win, I’ll use that fact in your story. (If you can’t think of anything to say, just make up a random fact. It will make your story more interesting)

Oh, and if you share this on Facebook or Twitter I’ll give you an extra entry. Or two extra entries, if you share on both. But PLEASE tell me in your comment if you shared it, because I’ll too lazy to go track it down. 🙂

The giveaway ends Sunday July 12 at midnight. Check back in a week to see if you’re a winner.

Okay, I’m just gonna say, doing a giveaway makes me feel like one of “those bloggers” who are more concerned about branding and traffic than anything else. Please know that was not my intention at all. Honestly, I am so thankful to all you loyal readers who keep coming back to my little blog. I stopped blogging for an ENTIRE YEAR, and you all came back. You are such a blessing to me, and I wanted to do a giveaway for you. I tried to specifically pick things that my readers would like.

Anyway.

Comment! Win! Enjoy!

P.S. I will ship anywhere in the world. So if you are my one reader from Finland, or the people from Columbia that sometimes show up, please enter!

Happy birthday! Your story inspired me when it came out because we shared not only the same name and age, but also constant illness. Your book was incredible and I hope you continue writing! Have an amazing birthday!

Random fact about myself? Three years ago I found myself being falsely accused of a horrible crime by someone with so much hate in their heart, it left me fighting for my innocence. (After almost a year of court and thousands of dollars my name was finally cleared). This has given me an entirely new outlook on life.

hmmmm….a random fact about me? Perhaps that every time I mow the yard I always hit the same tree. Every time. I think it moves in front of me as I come by. 😉 Or maybe it’s that I discovered that if I try to do chin ups on my Grandpa’s washline…most likely it will break & come down. Especially if 2 of my girl cousins are doing it at the same time. Whoops.

In high school we used to jump off the roof of the Oregon State crew docks (right there by the golf course ). We would jump off one end, float to the other, and climb back up and do it again. God is so good… With so many fallen trees in the Williamette, it is a wonder we didn’t get caught on one and drown. This was 35+ years ago, I am sure they have better security now!

Happy 25th! I am sure you will find the next 25 or more years to be equally or more adventurous than your first 25 years. Now you can say you are a quarter of a century old 🙂
A little over 25 years ago, I spent several months in a small village in Belize. During that time, the river flooded so much that there was no way to get across the floating bridge so the only way to get out was to cross the river in a dory. Was that ever a scary experience! It seems like there was only a few inches of clearance above the water and you had to hold very still so it wouldn’t tip over. The man that was paddling for me had to tell me it would be ok as I was deathly scared! During my stay there, I contracted malaria and needed to go to the doctor. I am not quite sure but I think it may have been over the time the river was flooded. We were afraid we wouldn’t be able to leave the country before the water went down so we took our vehicle across the river before the river got too high. It was an adventure I will never forget!

Just found your blog but have read quite a bit of your Mom’s books. The books you are giving away sound really interesting. I love beach combing and collecting the unusual “treasures”. I make up a song as I go along to sing for my grandsons when I tuck them in at night. My daughter tells me I have a vivid imagination and collect pebbles from driveways. 🙂

For the random fact(s):1.I’ve only been as far west as to Montana when I went with a friend in April! 2. We were packed up and headed west to MN from NY(moved) on my 13th birthday 4.5 years ago. 3.I’m left-handed.

Hey! I love your blog. Thanks for coming back. 🙂
I like giveaways too. (who doesn’t)
When I was in the 6th grade, I grabbed a 7th grader (a BOY, mind you) by the suspenders and flung him to the ground. Oh, and the bonus was that I tore his suspenders in the meantime.
Since then I’ve worked through my anger and violence issues. (Well, most of them) Every now and then I get the urge to fling certain people, but thanks be to God, I am able to suppress it. Otherwise I may be in prison for domestic violence.
I do consider myself somewhat non-resistant.
    I know, what a hypocrite.

Happy Birthday! I’ve been a blog stalker for the past several years and never commented, so I’m feeling rather shy.😳
Here’s my random fact: I leave notes taped onto the mirrors of public restrooms. Usually it’s to notify them that the restroom is in need of a good cleaning or complimenting them on a extra nice clean restroom. If the restroom is in nuetral condition I’ll just leave a note with something happy written on it and pray that it will make a sad person smile.

Back in the 60s I was stuck in an automatic car wash. The washer apparatus kept going around and around until someone finally saw my plight and turned it off.

  117. Fun! A giveaway! Happy birthday again. 🙂

I was once chased around my Spanish streets by a yelling Arab man trying to get me into his car. I fled by using opposite One Way streets, and when I got home my dad and a friend barged out to the streets to intimidate him forever. Thankfully, I never saw him again!

Wow! the comments are a wonderful read all by themselves! That “Paris Underground” sounds like a great read. I’ll have to see if I can get a copy. I’ve already read your book and given it away twice.
Random fact: As a substitute teacher, I usually don’t know where I’ll be working on my birthday which is in January but I take something to give away to the whole class. Stickers. Pencils. shaped erasers. 2 years ago the present I gave my family on my birthday was a biopsy on the lump found in my left breast which was cancer. My cancer was easily treated so I’m doing very well now but I do look at life differently and have different priorities

  124. hi, Emily!! happy birthday 😉 since i live in China, i think it would be really cool to recieve a package from America 😉 And at the young age of 42, i’m training to be a doula and have attended more than 10 births here in china. I’m no where near the numbers of 100’s or 1000s birth, but everyone has to start somewhere and I personally think there is nothing like experiencing new life with a family!!! here’s to another amazing 25 and an invite to deliver my package in person- hee hee

Fabulous post. We should do some portraits! We could trade a book or two. I read Seabiscuit one Summer, with my kids. Alex would read the most, she is the oldest. Sierra would watch her older sister with a curiosity that was fascinating. We don’t watch television. The 40-inch TV in the living room has not been on since Winter. I love this blog post, by the way!

Sounds fascinating! It’s a first for your blog. I only came across it because of a friend sharing it on fb. Happy 25th, have a wonderful year! Here’s my fact- It’s been a summer of making cake pops for a local bakery.. most weeks between 50-80. And I get to choose how to decorate them. That’s the best part!

I’m curious, do you have followers from Colombia, as in South America? That’s our daughter’s country of birth.
Interesting, true fact about me- I like chickens. I just do. Cheap therapy.

I am just delighted that you all are falling in love with Etta Shiber. 🙂 Christmas in July. What a jolly thing. Random fact. Hmm. You remember the time I accepted food from a stranger in a NYC subway station? Yeah. And there was the time a dude nearly proposed to me in Spanish and I nearly accepted. I’ve really got to learn Spanish.
