More Styles per Mile

Did I mention that this road trip is an all-nighter? Jenny so courteously took a picture of me sleeping this morning. Apparently I frown in my sleep.

According to Jenny, the following exchange happened while I slept:

Jenny accidentally brushed my ankle. I gasped and said, “Stop it stop it STOP IT” and jerked my body.

Jenny said, “Emily, what’s wrong?”

In a teary voice I said, “There’s a dog biting my ankle!”

“Emily, it’s not a dog, it’s just me, Jenny,” said Jenny.

I said, in a very annoyed voice, “I KNOW, just STOP IT.”

Eventually I woke up when we stopped at a rest area, and I brushed my teeth and changed my shirt. It’s one of my favorite shirts, even though it says “Immersion Discipleship” on it and I don’t know what that means. It sounds cool though, and it’s black, which is my favorite color.

When I went to sleep that night we were in Montana. When I woke up we were still in Montana.

Matt and Dad occupied the front of the car, while Jenny and I were in the back.

Jenny: I have to take a picture of this cool mural.

Me: Um, Jenny, it’s a picture of toilet paper.

Jenny: Nuh-uh, it’s paper towels.

Me: I’m pretty sure it’s toilet paper.

Here I am, making a “C” for Canada.

Canadian trees. So pretty.

So eventually we made it to Sioux Lookout, where my cousin Janet is getting married tomorrow. We drove to the place where we were going to stay. No one was home, and there was no note on the window or anything.

Remember, this was Canadian wilderness, and it was debatable whether or not our cell phones would work.

We knew there was a rehearsal dinner going on, and that some family from Minnesota would be there, so we drove around finding churches and looking at the license plates of cars to see if they were from Minnesota.

We had no luck.

Finally Mom called us. Apparently American cell phones do work in Canada. We have yet to find out how much that phone call cost. But in any case, we made it to the rehearsal dinner, and I grabbed my backpack and hastily tried to freshen up in the bathroom.

I ended up in this hastily thrown together ensemble, and ate a hamburger, and met the aunts of Mark, Janet’s fiance. It was a very low key rehearsal dinner.

But here’s the thing. Apparently Canadians drink tea. They served tea at the rehearsal dinner, and when we got back to the place we are staying and our hosts got home, they served us tea as well. I am very nearly ready to throw out my American half altogether and embrace my Canadian side.

Wedding tomorrow! Stay tuned!
